Madness and The Fragrance Underground
Disobeying the Rules of Olfaction
Inside every major fragrance house stands a wall. The Wall of Orphaned Fragrances. The Wall of Lost Dreams. This wall holds perfumes forgotten, abandoned—considered too daring, too rare, or too strange for the delicate sensibilities of the mainstream.
From that infamous wall, Charenton Macerations was born.
Here we craft fragrances that make a statement, scents that deliberately defy these so-called rules of olfaction.
Rooted in History. Mad as Hatters. Queer as Smell.
Our Mission
At Charenton Macerations, we create fragrances that make a statement.
Our brand is committed to olfactive storytelling unencumbered by the antiquated structural constraints and tired gender stereotypes of perfumes past. Our fragrances are not mindless aspirational accessories. Each scent is crafted from the raw emotional experiences of those who encounter it, further flowering from the rituals and revolutions of our collective odorous past. They speak using the rich, full vocabulary of all genders.
Transcendent. Irreverent. Provocative. Yet always incomplete.
The final ingredient is always you.Â
About the Founder
Douglas Bender founded the niche fragrance house, Charenton Macerations, in 2012.
His journey into perfumery began in the laboratory, researching the chemical composition of ancient Minoan and Mycenaean beauty artifacts. Reconstructing the forgotten resins and aromatic materials of antiquity revealed the powerful narrative potential of scent. This experience shaped his understanding of fragrance as a form of olfactory storytelling.
He later refined his craft under the guidance of leading masters in the fragrance industry, including work with Quest International (now part of Givaudan), studying disciplines ranging from raw material sourcing to fragrance formulation.
Douglas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Philosophy from Vassar College and a Master’s degree in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management from the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Through Charenton Macerations, Bender approaches perfumery as both historical excavation and artistic provocation, creating fragrances that draw from the past while gleefully dismantling the conventions of modern perfume.
