It All Started By Coming Out

Today is National Coming Out Day. Every year on National Coming Out Day, we celebrate and remember those coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or as an LGBTQ ally. We commemorate events like the Stonewall Riots, the Christopher Street Day Pride March, and of course, the National March on Washington for LGBT Rights (the first of which took place on October 14, 1979 and the second, pictured above, on October 11, 1987). The first National Coming Out Day was celebrated on October 11, 1988, one year after the second march on Washington, with 18 states participating. By 1990, the Coming Out movement and celebration grew to include all 50 states, merging its efforts with the Human Rights Campaign fund. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of NCOD, and fittingly, the theme is “Coming Out Still Matters.”

“Every person who speaks up changes more hearts and minds, and creates new advocates for equality.” – HRC
