Anyone who’s ever been out with me can attest to the fact that I carry around a lot of “stuff” in my bag. At any given time, I normally have on me: three cameras (a flip, a digital, and my iPhone), blotters, random fragrances I’m testing, tissues, plastic bags, sample vials, a notepad, and probably a few hundred little pieces of paper covered in scribbles. I keep all this with me because I never know when I might come across a “Bottle This” moment: a crucial part in the process of “madness” talked about inside Charenton Macerations.

What is “Bottle This?”

Ideas for fragrance concepts can come from just about anywhere. Visual aids, audio samples, an interesting story… these are all things I can come back to when brainstorming a new idea. When I’m out, I collect things like a packrat, capturing anything that might be tacked onto my inspiration wall for a closer look. It could be an interesting article ripped from a magazine, pictures from a trip to the street markets of Cairo, maybe some notes from my garden or a concert experience… anything that jumps out as being interesting… that makes me stop and think: a really great conversation piece. They are not always the most obvious fragrance objects in the room. I started calling them “Bottle This” moments because of the number of times I’ve said, “This is amazing. Someone really needs to bottle this.”

Bottle This – Ugly Beauty Orchids

I came across these orchids on a recent trip to BBG. They were only slightly fragrant, but I really liked the look of them. Colorful, alien… maybe even a little rotten. A brilliant example of ugly beauty. What fragrance materials spring to mind when you see these unique orchids?
